BACKGROUND
Ontario’s housing crisis has reached a breaking point. Homeownership is out of reach for too many people, and rents have skyrocketed, pushing families to the brink. Young professionals, seniors, and middle-class families are struggling to find a place to live, while students and workers are crammed into overpriced, substandard housing.
This crisis isn’t just about affordability—it’s about availability. Ontario needs 1.5 million new homes by 2031 to meet demand, yet the current pace of construction isn’t keeping up. Decades of restrictive zoning laws, red tape, and a failure to build the right types of housing have left Ontarians with fewer options and higher costs.

LIBERAL PLAN
The Ontario Liberal Party has a real plan to tackle the housing crisis and make sure everyone has a safe, affordable place to live. We will:
1. Build More Homes Where People Need Them
-
Unlock more land for housing by allowing fourplexes and mid-rise apartments in existing neighborhoods instead of limiting growth to expensive single-family homes.
-
Fast-track approvals for projects that create affordable housing, student housing, and homes near transit.
-
Support the construction of rental housing, ensuring developers build more long-term rental units instead of just condos.
2. Make Homeownership Affordable Again
-
Crack down on housing speculation by increasing taxes on investors who leave homes empty.
-
Help first-time homebuyers with a new Ontario Home Savings Plan, allowing buyers to save tax-free for their first home.
-
End exclusionary zoning that prevents young families from buying homes in established communities.
3. Protect Renters from Unfair Costs
-
Strengthen rent control to prevent landlords from massive rent hikes between tenants.
-
Expand legal protections for renters, ensuring fair treatment and stopping unjust evictions.
-
Increase funding for affordable housing projects, providing more options for those who need it most.
IMPACT: Affordable Homes, Stronger Communities
-
More homes will be built where people need them, reducing competition and lowering prices.
-
First-time buyers will have a real chance at homeownership instead of being priced out of the market.
-
Renters will have stronger protections, with more stable rents and better housing options.
-
Ontario will finally meet its housing needs, preventing homelessness and giving every Ontarian a fair shot at a decent place to live.
For too long, Ontario’s housing crisis has been ignored while people struggle to find a place they can afford. The Ontario Liberal Party is ready to build a future where everyone has a home.
