BACKGROUND
Ontario’s economy depends on efficient, reliable public transit, yet too many communities—especially in the Kitchener-Waterloo region—are underserved. Commuters are stuck in gridlock, transit options are unreliable, and businesses are losing talent because workers can’t easily get to jobs in other parts of the province.
Nowhere is this problem more obvious than in Kitchener-Waterloo, where the promise of two-way, all-day GO train service remains unfulfilled. Despite years of commitments, there is still no all-day, two-way rail connection to Toronto, leaving workers and students with long, unpredictable commutes. Expanding GO service isn’t just about convenience—it’s about economic growth, housing affordability, and reducing congestion on our roads.

LIBERAL PLAN
The Ontario Liberal Party has a clear plan to expand transit options and get Ontario moving again.
1. Building Two-Way, All-Day GO for Kitchener-Waterloo
-
Fast-track infrastructure upgrades to complete two-way, all-day GO train service between Kitchener-Waterloo and Toronto.
-
Expand train service to Cambridge by adding 17 km of rapid transit from Fairway Station in Kitchener to Downtown Cambridge, seamlessly connecting Waterloo Region’s urban centres.
2. Uploading Costs to Ensure Reliable, Well-Funded Transit
-
Take over the operating and capital costs of major transit projects like the Ottawa LRT ensuring municipalities aren’t forced to cut service due to budget shortfalls.
-
Provide stable, predictable funding for local transit agencies so they can expand service, improve reliability, and maintain infrastructure.
-
Fix Ontario’s broken transit planning process, ensuring transit expansion happens based on real needs, not political decisions.
3. Making Public Transit Safer for Everyone
-
Increase security presence on transit, ensuring there are more transit officers and mental health professionals available to address safety concerns.
-
Implement stronger protections for transit workers, ensuring they have the resources and support to do their jobs safely.
-
Improve station and vehicle safety features, including better lighting, emergency call buttons, and security cameras.
IMPACT: Faster, Safer, More Reliable Transit
-
Kitchener-Waterloo will finally have the two-way, all-day GO service it was promised, making travel to and from Toronto fast and reliable.
-
Cities will no longer have to bear the full financial burden of major transit projects, preventing service cuts and delays.
-
Riders and transit workers will feel safer, with better security and protections in place.
-
More Ontarians will choose transit, reducing congestion, lowering emissions, and strengthening local economies.
Ontario deserves a transit system that works—one that is fast, safe, and properly funded. The Ontario Liberal Party is ready to get Ontario moving again.
